| When I was a young girl I remember being fascinated by the idea of an easy bake oven. It was a toy, but it could actually bake a cake with the heat of a light bulb. The commercials on TV were very exciting. Mothers and daughters working together to put the tiny cake into its tiny oven and then in just a few minutes you have a tasty treat. It turns out that the gadget was a bit on the expensive side so I got a few of the cake mixes and we cooked them in the big oven. Not nearly the thrill that the commercial advertised. I guess it was just the idea of getting a toy that could actually do something useful that I was excited about. I had forgotten all about this until two weeks ago when I decided to pick up a new crockpot at Target. I had an older version that was very large and heavy. It seemed to burn the food that I tried to cook in it so it mostly stayed in the cupboard. The newer one I bought was smaller (4 1/2 Quarts), sleeker and looked like something that I could stand to have on my counter fulltime. When I got the gadget home I pulled out a cookbook that I had picked up a few years ago. |

The cookbook was called Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker by Robin Robertson. I was briefly intrigued by the idea but because I seemed to have a slow cooker that burned everything, this book was collecting dust on the shelf. I pulled it back out and tried making some slow roasted vegetables. A dish called "vegetable Tian with Herbes de Provence". I have no idea what a "tian" is, but this recipe was amazing, next I tried a black bean soup that was also delicious.
I have been a vegetarian for over 35 years (kind of a wimpy one at times, because I do occasionally eat fish). But these recipes have made eating a pretty exciting part of my day. I have made my own granola twice in the slow cooker. I don't know how long I will keep this blog thing going, but I thought it might be fun, since it looks like I am going to try to cook the whole book.
I finally got my easy bake oven!!
