So yesterday she is helping me make an apple crisp (my favorite Rosh haShana recipe from the Moosewood cookbook) and she turns to me and says: "איפה למדת לבשל?" (Where did you learn to cook?). She followed that question with --"everything that I have eaten here has been so tasty". Wow! I answered her that I learned right where she was standing (in my kitchen) in the school of trial and error. Luckily for me my husband is a good sport about eating the errors as well. So what I share here are my "higher" moments in the kitchen and what I consider worth my time. Here is Dana (just so happens that we have the same name) the author of the sweet question of the week.

Take a casserole dish and fill it 2/3's full with peeled slices apples. Make sure the apples are firm and tart. I like cripps pink or honeycrisp. pour over them 3 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lemon juice and about a tablespoon of white sugar.
For the topping mix together:
1 cup of whole wheat flour
1 cup of oats
1 stick of butter (or margarine) melted
3 Tablespoons of brown sugar
1 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp of salt
mix this all together. I usually end up mixing it with my hands and it should be the texture of a bit dry cookie dough. If it is too dry to hold together add a bit more butter (or margarine for our vegan friends). Mold it over the apples in the pan to make a nice cover and bake it at 375 degrees F (190 C) for 35-40 minutes until the fruit is bubbling a bit under the crust. Best served warm--even better with a little vanilla ice cream.
Happy cooking everyone. I hope someone asks you--"Hey where did you learn to cook?"
